BBC One Inside Out Southwest - Love & Loss

This is the heartwarming story of a close-knit family that is both intimate and universal. Stan and Mary first meet on the beach in Sidmouth in the 1950s. Despite his father's struggles as a fisherman who could not afford his own boat, Stan dreams of working on the trawlers in Brixham. Against his mother's wishes for him to work as a builder, Stan is determined to pursue his passion for the sea. Together with Mary and their young family, they work tirelessly to build a thriving fishing business. Their son Ian follows in his father's footsteps and heads to Brixham at just 16 to become a trawlerman. For more on this touching story and Sidmouth's fishing and coastal heritage, watch our longer documentary, Working the Sea. Produced by Butterfly Effect Films.
